Challenge
The steep topography of the site posed the most significant challenge, with erosion risk and accessibility constraints complicating construction. The clients also wanted a house that was both private and open, offering protection from neighboring properties while maximizing exposure to views and daylight. Fieldwork needed to resolve these opposing desires, designing a home that felt safe and secluded yet expansive and outward-looking. Material selection had to be carefully considered to endure the hillside conditions and reflect a sense of permanence without overwhelming the natural beauty of the setting.
Impact
The finished home embodies balance—anchored to the hillside while opening fully to its environment. Layered terraces create multiple vantage points, allowing residents to experience the landscape from different perspectives throughout the day. Interiors are defined by warm woods, stone, and simple geometries that frame, rather than compete with, the views. The design achieved the clients’ vision of a home that is both sanctuary and stage, giving them privacy while still feeling deeply connected to the hillside. Casa Ladera has since been featured in several architectural journals as a model of residential design integrated with challenging terrain.
